Our Mission

The Harborside Community Gardens exists to create and nurture community run organic gardens. We are deeply committed to educating the community and especially the community’s youth about organic methods, preservation of open spaces and native habitats for biodiversity. Through these means we can encourage sustainable living techniques and recycling to all of those in the community.

History

In 2008-2009, Harborside Academy, Carthage College, and the Gateway Technical GTC developed a partnership to create and maintain the Harborside Community Garden and Greenhouse to: provide opportunities for Harborside, Carthage, and Gateway students to learn about sustainable gardening practices, provide local produce to incorporate into the lunch program at Harborside and to sell at the Kenosha Farmers Market, and educate K-8 KUSD students and the Kenosha Community about the importance of locally produced fresh fruit and vegetables.

Mary Bohning, Environmental Science teacher at Harborside Academy, Prisca Moore, Associate Professor in the Carthage Education Department, Kate Jerome, Director of the Horticulture Program at GTC, and students in the Horticulture program develop and maintain the Harborside School/Community Garden and Greenhouse
